Finding Strength in the Storm

ACROSS Communications

12 Sept 2025

A dedicated professional working in the health sector, a space she was drawn to through her own lived experiences. Growing up with a parent who struggled with severe mental illness shaped her empathy and resilience. But nothing prepared her for the grief that followed her father's death by suicide.

“It hit our family hard” she recalls. His passing brought not just grief, but ongoing contact with services like the coroner's office and health advocacy groups. It felt never-ending.”

Despite her busy work life and a seemingly functional exterior, she was carrying an immense emotional burden. That’s when she came across ACROSS’ Bereaved by Suicide support services. Reaching out was a turning point. Katt, a Bereaved By Suicide facilitator and one of ACROSS’ social worker/counsellors, was her first point of contact. Katt took the time to explain everything and made her feel like it was okay to be where she was emotionally. "You think you’re okay and back in a good place, and then it all comes crashing back. The support group and one-on-one counselling were life changing. I’m incredibly grateful,” she shares.

But it wasn't just about managing grief. ACROSS helped her reconnect with herself.

With Katt's encouragement, she found healing in unexpected places, like gardening. “One session, Katt suggested I buy a plant. That sparked a whole new hobby,” she says with a smile. “Now I have a garden full of flowers ready to bloom in spring. It’s not just about plants. It’s about slowing down, noticing beauty, and making space to breathe.”

For her, this support has been more than therapeutic, it’s been transformational.

“I’ve learned to be gentle with myself, to make time for things I enjoy, and to reflect. Katt reminded me to stop and appreciate how far I’ve come. That’s a gift I’ll always carry.”

Her story is not just one of healing, it’s also one of purpose

The loss of her father and the lessons of her childhood led her to the very work she does today. “People with long-term disabilities or sudden life changes need someone who sees them. I know that need, because I’ve lived it. And now I get to give back.”

“Katt wasn’t just a counsellor, Katt became a steady, grounding presence. Someone who truly got it.”

Today, she continues to navigate life with more self-awareness, balance, and compassion. And she credits ACROSS for being there when she needed it most.

Her message to others is simple:

“If you're grieving, don’t do it alone. Reach out. ACROSS doesn’t just provide counselling. They help people grow, heal, and live again.”
