Empowering Our Rangatahi

ACROSS Communications

25 Aug 2024

Facing trauma at a young age is incredibly challenging, and balancing school life on top of that makes it even harder. A group of rangatahi in our community were on the verge of exclusion, grappling with personal challenges, self-esteem, and social interactions.

We knew there was something we could do to make a difference.

When they connected with our social worker and their mentor, Banele, things began to shift. Described as a supportive and understanding guide, Banele helped them navigate their struggles with care and patience. He recognised that for these rangatahi to truly thrive, their whānau needed support too, so he involved them in the process, creating a holistic, wrap-around approach to ensure everyone played a part in their success.

For one young man, the simple act of keeping his hoodie on in public without fear of judgment became a victory, knowing he had support if anyone questioned him. Another, who once shied away from others, started to engage in conversations— a big step for someone who used to shy away from social interactions.

Thanks to Banele, these young men gained confidence, improved their well-being, and hit major milestones in their lives. But there are still many more rangatahi and their whānau facing similar struggles, uncertain of where to turn for help. This program is far more than mentorship—it’s a lifeline, providing the tools and support they need to face life’s challenges with strength and confidence.

Your donation today will provide our rangatahi with the care and support they need during these challenging times.

These young men, like everyone, have dreams and aspirations. With your support, we can continue helping them, and others like them, find their path forward.
